![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Athearn motors arent isolated from the frame, so the first step is to change. Well woth the expense of the NWSL can motor. Consider adding wipers or other extra pickups before installing a decoder. They are all almost 30 years old and still run like new. A setting of 007 will set the decoder to normally run in reverse and 28/128 speed steps and 2 digit address analog mode on. This requires you to re-program the decoder to run normally in reverse direction. ![]() The also ran at almost the same speed as the Atlas locomotives. The Digitrax DN163K1C needs to be installed in the Athearn F45 or FP45 frame backwards. BUT after remotoring the Athearn locomotives, they ran almost as good as the Atlas locomotives. Once Atlas brought out their line of Alco RS units with the Kato drive, I never looked back at the Athearn locomotives. I ended up remotoring all of them with Northwest Shortline can motors. With a load behind then, they would surge going down grade and really lug down pulling a grade. I was still not impressed with the was they ran though. After some light lubrication of the gear towers in the truck and inserting Atheran bushings on the worm gear shaft to minimize fore and aft movement, the amperage draw dropped to about a quarter of an amp. Out of the box they were drawing anywhere from three quarters of an amp to one amp. I do not use DCC, but eons ago, the Atheran locomotives were probably the best bang for the buck. ![]()
